Glossary

RAM

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. The data stored in RAM can be accessed almost instantly regardless of where in memory it is stored, so it’s very fast — milliseconds fast. RAM has a very fast path to the computer’s CPU, or central processing unit, the brain of the computer that does most of the work.

CPU/Processor

The Core Processing Unit (CPU) is often referred to as the brains of the computer. While the CPU only makes up one of many processing units, it is one of the most important. It is the part of a computer that performs calculations, actions, and runs programs.

The CPU takes instructional inputs from the computer’s RAM, decodes and processes the action, before delivering an output. CPUs are in all sorts of devices ranging from computers and laptops, to smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs.

SSD

A Solid-State Drive (SSD) is a new generation of storage device used in computers. SSDs replace traditional mechanical hard disks by using flash-based memory, which is significantly faster. … SSDs speed up computers significantly due to their low read-access times and fast throughputs

HDD

A Hard Disk Drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive, or fixed disk is an electro-mechanical data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage and one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters. They can

GPU

A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), is a specialized processor originally designed to accelerate graphics rendering. GPUs can process many pieces of data simultaneously, making them useful for machine learning, video editing, and gaming applications.

Resolution

Resolution measures the number of pixels in a digital image or display. It is defined as width by height, or W x H, where W is the number of horizontal pixels and H is the number of vertical pixels. For example, the resolution of an HDTV is 1920 x 1080.

Windows

Windows is a series of operating systems developed by Microsoft. Each version of Windows includes a graphical user interface, with a desktop that allows users to view files and folders in windows. For the past two decades, Windows has been the most widely used operating system for personal computers PCs

Integrated Graphics

Integrated graphics shares memory with the CPU and provides a more economical alternative to the stand-alone card known as GPU, Integrated graphics can be non-programmable or programmable. Both AMD and Intel offer their own Integrated solutions.

Nvidia

Nvidia is a computer chip manufacturer and technology company. … Nvidia is known as a market leader in the design of graphics processing units, or GPUs, for the gaming market, as well as system on chips, or SOCs, for the mobile computing and automotive markets.

Radeon

Radeon is a brand of computer products, including graphics processing units, random-access memory, RAM disk software, and solid-state drives, produced by Radeon Technologies Group, a division of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Intel

Intel supplies microprocessors for computer system manufacturers such as Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Intel also manufactures motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers and integrated circuits, flash memory, graphics chips, embedded processors and other devices related to computing.

AMD

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. is a manufacturer of semiconductor devices including CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips. … With its own chip designs.
